Windbond MF 101 P
General
WINDBOND MF-101P is Melamine Formaldehyde resin powder suitable for impregnation of base and decorative papers, in the manufacture of low pressure melamine faced wood board. For the making of high pressure decorative laminates, it is used in overlaying the surface. It has common use in plywood gluing. It is blended with urea glue to achieve superior bonding properties and improved moisture resistance. It is soluble in water and clear to slightly hazy solution. It is first dissolved in water and then the solution is blended with urea glue. In general, 10-25% by weight of WINDBOND MF-101P solution may be blended with WINDBOND CR-101P, depending on the requirement of bonding strength of the plywood

2. IMPREGNATION
For impregnation application, generally WINDBOND MF-101P powder is dissolved with water to make 50% solution. Actual concentration may be varied based on the characteristics of the paper and RCM (resin content per square meter).
3. IMPREGNATION OF PAPERS
It is strongly recommended to prepare and consume fresh resin solution on daily basis otherwise there are chances of occulation. Any of the conventional method is applicable for impregnation of paper.
4. SOLUTION PREPARATION
The required quantity of distilled/deionized water is taken into a mixer with proper mixing arrangement. Solution concentration varies between 40 to 60%. Maintain the dissolution temperature between 25 to 30°C. Dissolution of powder will be time consuming if the temperature is lowered. Stirring has to be continued until the powder is uniformly dissolved and a clear to slightly hazy solution is formed. Then the solution has to be filtered by suitable mesh size.
Dissolution may be faster by using 10 to 15% methyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. It is advisable to maintain the dissolution temperature not more than 35°C to get more useable life of resin (pot life).
5. POST - FORMING IMPREGNATED STOCKS
Water soluble plasticizers may be added in WINDBOND MF-101P resin solution 10-15% by weight at site to use in the impregnation of paper stock suitable for manufacture of post forming laminates. However, the addition varies based on the application requirement.
6. GUIDANCE FOR IMPREGNATION AND DRYING OF PAPERS
Material | Paper | Concentration of Resin Solution % | Resin content in impregnated and dried sheet | SPECIFIC VALUES |
Print Sheet (when used with overlay) | 80-150 GSM |
40-60 | 35-45% | 4-5% |
Decorative base sheet (when used without overlay) | 120-170 GSM |
55-70 | 55-70% | 4-7% |
Overlay | 25-50 GSM |
50-60 | 60-75% | 3-6.5% |
7. DRYING
Drying of impregnated paper may be carried out at 90 to 140°C in a vertical or horizontal type of drying tunnels. The drying time in the tunnel depends on so many factor s like type, size and length of the drying tunnel, paper throughput speed, RCM (resin content per square meter), temperature, volatile content etc. The impregnated and dried sheets are to be stored in cool and dry place. Storage temperature should be 25-30°C and relative humidity 30-40%. Both heat and humidity are undesirable to sustain the paper quality.
8. CURING AND PRESSING CONDITIONS
Curing is carried out at Hot Press temperature between 140-160°C and pressure range between 50-60 Kg per sq. cm.
For low pressure laminating applications like surfacing of the wood boards, curing can be done at lower pressure.
After curing, laminated sheets should be cooled down to 40-45°C under certain working pressure to get better surface finishing and enhanced dimensional stability.
9. MAJOR APPLICATION AREAS
Plywood, Particle Board, MDF, Impregnation of base/decorative papers and to overlay in high pressure decorative laminates.
Low emission application.
10-25% by weight of WINDBOND MF-101P solution may be blended with WINDBOND CR-101P, depending on the requirement of bonding strength of the plywood.
10. PACKING
25 Kg packing available in HDP/PP bag with polyethylene liner.
11. HANDLING
During handling Melamine Formaldehyde Resin, it is wise to use to wear hand gloves to avoid direct skin contact. Hands and other contact area to be washed soap and water before meal and when handling is over.
12. STORAGE
Store in original bags in a cool and dry place to protect from heat and moisture absorption. It is very sensitive to moisture so Bags should be properly closed. Recommended storage temperature is 20-25°C. Storage life at 25°C: 06 months.
